Star Topology
Star Topology is a topology for a Local Area Network (LAN) in which all nodes are individually connected to a central connection point like a Hub or a Switch.The star topology is one of the most common computer topologies .The star topology reduces the impact of a transmission line failture by independently connecting each host to the hub.The hub and hosts and the transmission lines between them , from a graph with the topology of a star . Data on a star network passes through the hub before continuing to its destination.
Uses of Star Topology;
1) It is used to transmit data across the central hub between the network nodes.
2)It is used in Local Area Network.
3) It is networking set up used with 10BASE-10 cabling.
Function of Star Topology;
1) All computers are connected to a central hub.
2) Problems cam be isolated to individual computers.
3) Easy installing but lots of cabling.
Advantages of Star Topology are ;
1) Easy to install and wire.
2)No disruption to the network when connecting or removing devices.
3) Requires more cable length than a linear bus topology.
Disadvantages of Star Topology;
1)It is expensive to install as this type of network uses the most cable(network cable is expensive).
2) Extra Hardware is required (hubs ans switch ) which adds to cost.
3)If hub or switch falls all device connected to it will have no network connection.
Some of the amazing facts on Star Topology are;
- All network connection are located in a single place, which makes it easy to toubleshoot and reconfigure.
- Notes can be added to or removed from the network easily.
- Every node has its own cable .
- The star requires more cable than any other topology.
- Cabling problems usually effect any one node.
